‘Backbending with ease’ Yoga Workshop

Saturday 18th April @ Yoga Tree Studio

9.30am till 12.30pm

Whether you’re a relative newcomer to yoga a seasoned practitioner or Yoga teacher, you will have experienced the inspirational power of backbends.  They are a key element of the practice and help us feel uplifted and inspired.  However, they are very easily performed incorrectly and we shy away from them as they cause us discomfort, this workshop will provide you with the key principals to practice them safely and pain-free, creating strength and freedom.

Backbending is commonly associated with opening the heart, and in particular with opening up the front of our body – the part of us that faces the world. But if we focus solely on this aspect we may lose awareness of some of the deeper supporting structures of the spine.

We will explore the key principals of safe back bending

  • Spine lengthening, creating space in the lumber
  • How the core supports us to open
  • The use of the correct breath to connect us into Brahma Nadi, the energetic channel of the spine, so highly prized by the Hatha Yogie
  • The key postures and what parts of the body need to be released to allow a full opening in more advanced asana’s

This session will be intelligently sequenced so that you have the opportunity to experience the inspirational and uplifting energy of yoga ‘backbends’ leading us to peak poses such as Urdhva Dhanurasana, and Dwi Pada Viparita Dandasana (as seen above).

There will be kramas (variations of these poses) that will be accessible to everyone making this workshop accessible and essential for all aspiring yoga practitioners.

All rounded off with some deeply restorative counterposes to ensure your energy is balanced and your central nervous system calm before you leave to enjoy the rest of your weekend.
