2 Venues – from the Rainforest to the Beach

with Brigitte Riley and Rosemary Booker

The island paradise of Bali will create a unique impression that will leave you in a state of serenity and peacefulness long after you’ve left. From the rain forest to the beach, our adventure in Bali will be split between two locations so you will experience the best of what this lovely island has to offer. There will also be plenty of opportunity to explore, shop the markets, indulge in delicious food, visit temples, plantations and farms, waterfalls, volcano’s, snorkel in the crystal clear sea, take a sunrise dolphin boat trip  – or simply relax & lose yourself in this stunning exotic island of Bali.

1st Venue – Ubud and The Rainforest

Sunday 7th October – Sunday 14th October 2018

7 nights at cottages with spa in Ubud – the cultural heart of Bali

Saturday 6th October – travel day

Arrival – Sunday 7th October from 2pm onwards

Twice daily yoga – Monday 8th – Friday 12th inclusive

Depart Sunday morning 14th October to Beach resort

Venue and surrounding area

Our first venue is located in the tranquil hills just 25 minutes walk or a 10 minute tuk tuk ride from the village centre of Ubud, and offers lovely rural views surrounded by lush, green, fertile rice paddies. Bali’s natural beauty remains a part of it’s grounds.

Ubud is Bali’s most famous town and is the artistic, hippy and cultural heart of Bali, here you will find artists, dancers, musicians and sculptors as well as many hippy’s and yogi’s. The Ubud market is a favourite with a vast array of produce, gifts, clothes, mats as well as Balinese handicrafts, local artists displaying their work and loads of traditional and modern merchandise for sale and all for a very good price. The nearby monkey forest has a temple in the midst of a jungle with many mischievous monkeys

There are many fabulous restaurants in Ubud it is easy to see why the area has fast become one of the best places in Bali for food! Suiting all budgets, there is jungle tree top fine dining, riverside hangouts, from gourmet to gastro as well as cheap and cheerful roadside grub to get your taste buds going.

On site, there is a spa and wellness centre, hot tub, gardens, terrace, library, gift shop, Ananda Cottages also has three swimming pools with sunbeds, overlooking garden and rice field and a landscaped area, one of these is a natural spring-water swimming pool.

Accommodation

In each cottage, there is beautiful Balinese decor and architecture, whilst you will also find all the modern conveniences expected by the discerning international traveller here. All rooms have a fabulous interior design, are air-conditioned, have gorgeous exotic garden bathrooms and a large wrap around private balcony, conveying the essence of the tropics.

Food

On arrival – Sunday 7th October, we will organise and book an evening meal for the whole group to be together and meet.

After our morning yoga practice, every day, there will be a delicious brunch served for the whole group to eat together. As there are so many (very reasonably priced) restaurants to choose from on our doorstep here in Ubud, rather than eating dinner at the retreat venue every evening, we thought that we would offer you the option of dining out for this first week to give you a chance to explore the area more. However, if you’re feeling like an early night or relaxing, there is also the option of staying in and eating in the open-air restaurant on site which serves European and Indonesian cuisine.

Yoga Space

Our yoga space at our first location here has stunning views over the resort gardens and adjacent rice terraces with luscious views from every side. It is a beautiful spacious open shala and has a very rustic feel with polished wooden Balinese flooring, the roof is made from bamboo with large wooden beams. The space is fully equipped with yoga mats and props. We will practice yoga here twice daily from Monday 8th October – Friday 12th October inclusive.

Excursions

At the end of our yoga week, Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th October will be a group day off, perhaps for you to go further afield on an excursion, the hotel can organise anything that you may like to do. Any time, the venue can also arrange cycling, canoeing, fishing, horse riding, painting lessons, Balinese music lessons, Balinese dancing lessons, wood carving, natural walks or you may just want to do your own thing and simply relax. We will stay the Saturday night here in Ubud, then on the morning of Sunday 15th October, we will arrange transport for you to our next retreat venue to the north of the island on a secluded beach.

Venue and surrounding area

Tucked away in a remote village, at the water’s edge beneath the mountains, far from the hustle and bustle of Ubud and the South, you can replenish your soul by the ocean, a symbol of purity, within the protection of the ridge of mountains that stand to represent man’s connection to the gods, an integral part of Bali’s fundamental philosophy of the three components to a balanced, harmonised life; the connection among people, the connection with nature and the connection with the spiritual. This venue strive to provide a balance of modern comfort with nature, tradition and style, in harmony with the incredible beauty and traditional village life for which Northern Bali is well known. The private seclusion here will offer us an intimate feel and an atmosphere of peace and pure tranquillity… the perfect place to let go and relax.

Only a few steps from the pool to the shore, dive in for a refreshing swim, take a sea kayaks out for a paddle or grab a mask, snorkel and fins to explore the reefs out in front of the resort. You’ll be delighted by the variety of corals and tropical fish. Here there are two swimming pools, or you may like to visit the Spa, where you will experience the bliss of massages and treatments using natural oils, lotions and creams, emerging relaxed, revived and refreshed.

At the resort’s boutique, you will find a selection of locally handcrafted gift items perfect to bring home to family and friends as souvenirs as well as a selection of resort attire, including sarongs, swimwear and dresses, as well as silver and pearl jewellery made in Bali.

Accommodation

This exclusive and intimate boutique resort, offers us a variety of accommodation options to accommodate single, twin and double rooms within villas and bungalows. All villas are spacious and well-appointed with locally crafted decor and furniture, and all have comfortable outdoor terraces. Every room is air-conditioned with en-suite bathrooms and hot water. From your villa/bungalow you will enjoy expansive views of the gardens and/or sea and always just a few steps away from the swimming pools, ocean and restaurant.

Cuisine

The food here is exquisite and beautifully nutritionally balanced. We will be served healthy, delicious vegetarian food for breakfast lunch and dinner (there will also be the option to eat freshly caught local fish, this will be an extra). Over the course of our stay, the chefs will prepare a selection of delectable Balinese, Indonesian and Western cuisine using local ingredients. The vegetables and spices are from their own gardens, supplemented with fresh produce from the local markets. We will dine on the terrace overlooking the ocean or in the open-air restaurant.

Yoga Space

Here there are several yoga spaces, both air conditioned and open-air, as well as terraces perfect for doing early morning or sunset yoga. Our intimate setting will provide an excellent atmosphere that fosters group communication and positive group dynamics. It’s hard to imagine a more perfect setting for a retreat than the lush gardens of Poinciana on the shores of the Bali Sea. This space is fully equipped with yoga mats and props. We will practice yoga here twice daily from Monday 15th October – Friday 19th October inclusive.

Excursions

For the more adventurous, we can organise boat trips and full day tours, dive & snorkelling trips to see the spectacular marine life of Amed or to Tulamben to explore the U.S.S. Liberty WWII shipwreck. We can also organise half day or full day excursions in the area to nearby waterfalls, hot springs, botanical gardens, volcano trek, and temples.

The Yoga

Daily yoga and meditation classes will be offered at both venues, our intention being to awaken, rejuvenate and relax your body and mind. Our aim is to help you to grow, develop and evolve your own personal practice. With two experienced teachers to guide you, you will receive more personal attention and assistance in order for you to explore at your level. To attend both Brigitte’s and Rosemary’s morning classes, we would prefer that you have been practising yoga for a minimum of one year as these classes will be more dynamic.

*The classes are open to all levels of practitioner except complete beginners – please see below

Mornings

Every morning, beginning at around 7.30 am there will be meditation and pranayama practice, closely followed by an alignment based vinyasya flow class taught by either Rosemary or Brigitte and sometimes jointly. We will then have a hearty breakfast/brunch buffet.

Evenings

Our second yoga class of the day will be in the late afternoon around 5pm. These sessions will vary each day and will include all aspects of yoga such as restorative yoga, yin yoga, meditation, technique/therapeutics class, yoga nidra, pranayama and chanting.

* Beginners yoga for non yogi’s

We are aware that this wonderful holiday may attract couples whereby one half of the couple is a complete beginner to yoga. Whilst the price of the holiday will remain the same to yogi’s and non yogi’s alike, we are therefore offering beginners classes in the mornings too, which of course are completely optional. These classes will be taught by Brian Riley (Brigitte’s husband), at the first venue, they will take place around mid morning and at the 2nd venue, they will begin at the same time as our regular class as we have a few more yoga spaces to choose from here. In the afternoon’s, the beginner yogi’s are most welcome to join the session with everyone as the yoga will be much slower and more relaxing.

Brigitte Riley

Brigitte is a Registered Senior Yoga Teacher with Yoga Alliance UK and has been teaching yoga for 14 years. In that time she has been privileged to study with many respected teachers whom have offered her a wealth of skill and experience in many different styles of yoga. She is known for her in-depth skill of bodily alignment, therapeutics, fluid creative movement, philosophy knowledge, keeping it real and her zest for life. She teaches weekly classes and private’s in Milton Keynes, UK as well as teacher training sessions, workshops and yoga retreats nationally and internationally.

Brian Riley

Brian’s yoga journey started in 2009 after attending his first class with Brigitte, he discovered that the yoga resonated with him on many levels. It was when he had the realisation that yoga is not just about gaining flexibility, but more about awareness and how to skilfully navigate life with greater intelligence off the mat too, that he decided to embark on his own Yoga teacher training program. He was awarded his teacher diploma in December 2014 and now often assists and demonstrates at many of Brigitte’s classes, workshops or retreats, thus gaining first hand guidance for his own teaching. He has a compassionate approach to teaching and feels most inspired and rewarded by teaching complete beginners. He creates a safe space and meets each student at their own level, so that each individual feels supported within their own unique practice. He has a sound understanding of body anatomy and offers basic alignment cues with lots of encouragement to enable students to find a deeper state of awareness within their bodies and minds. Brian is a registered RYT 200 teacher with Yoga Alliance UK.
