Sun Salutations are a traditional, poetic and fundamental part of our Yoga asana practice they embody both the grace and strength 

Surya Namaskara is a dynamic group of asanas (postures) which are very versatile being used as a warm up for all of the joints, muscles and internal organs of the body, as a way to transition from one posture to another creating a flowing practice as well as being a full practice in their own right, inducing a healthy, vigorous and active life, while at the same time, preparing the practitioner for a spiritual practice

Different Yoga traditions have slightly different Surya Namaskara variations.

Essential Workshop Learning

  • Classical Surya Namaskar – covering each of the 12 postures individually, how to ‘transition’ from one posture to the other, how each posture supports either inhale or exhale, and the specific chant for each posture
  • Astanga Yoga (Shri K. Pattabhi Jois’s Yoga) – Series A, which will include Chaturanga (low plank) and Urdhva Mukka Svenasana (Upward facing dog)
  • Handouts detailing breath and alignment, so that you can incorporate these practices within either your weekly class or included them as a home practice 

Benefits of Surya Namaskar

  • direct vitalising effect on the solar energy of the body
  • creates heat washing out tiredness, toxins, lazyness and keeps you fresh and active
  • stimulates and balances all the systems of the body, including the endocrine, circulatory, respiratory and digestive systems
  • synchronising the breath with the physical movements ensures at least for a few minutes daily, you breathe as deeply and rhythmically as possible
  • Removes carbon dioxide from the lungs and replaces it with fresh oxygen
  • increasing mental clarity by bringing fresh, oxygenated blood to the brain
  • works on the whole system making you stronger mentally, physically and emotionally giving stability and a stable mind

There is limited space due to the size of the venue and as we move into our next 6 weeks of practice Surya Namaskar will feature as we use it to keep us warm and agile through the winter months
